blog

It's been a busy year so far, with an expedition to China and several extra contract jobs. Which means I don't really have anything to share from those. Oh, and we bought a house and moved into it as well. I did not appreciate how much time that can take up!

But the new location (Stillwater) is a small coastal settlement within the greater Auckland area. Coastal doesn't quite capture it however. Stillwater is by the estuarine part of a river, while the actual beach itself, is about a 30 minute hike from our new house.

One of the appeals of the beach is it is home to a number of tūturiwhatu or NZ dotterels. This is a small shore bird, and threatened species, endemic to New Zealand. Now I'm not a serious bird photographer, more a recreational one. I enjoy taking photos of birds. And the small tūturiwhatu are a species I find enchanting. I also appreciate that within about 30 mintes, I can be in the same area as a threatened native species.

Spotting the birds is a little tricky at first. They're small and they blend in well with the beach. But once they start moving and you get attuned to spotting them it becomes easier. Sometimes you can just sit and lie down and they come very close to you anyway. I got some pics I liked.

For those of you interested in the technical side of things, these were taken with my Sony a1 (in silent mode) and 100-400mm GM lens.

When sorrows come, they come not single spies, but in battalions - Hamlet

2023 has been very tough on my photography. Both events around New Zealand and in my personal life threw up many obstacles. The floods in Auckland, the damage caused by Cyclone Gabrielle, the death of my mother, an assault, getting hit by a motorist while biking to work (it took months to recover from the injuries), going to China for 2 months and catching Covid19 there, all prevented a lot of photography.

On the gear front I've sold my Sony a7Riii, a9 (and an old a7R) and bought a Sony FX30 and a1. The a1 is a great all-round camera. It solved the dilemma over which camera to bring on a trip. Before I used the a7Riii for my landscape work and the a9 for wildlife and birds. What if I wanted to shoot both subjects? I'd either have to bring both or accept I'd not get the photos I really wanted. The a1 is just better at landscapes and birds than either camera. And with its video tools (up to 8K video recording) it excelled there also. It's the camera that can do it all.

My plans for 2024 are to rework my website into a more modern layout. I've begun that process. And I'm hoping to specialise increasingly in seascape photography. Since the Waitakere Ranges have had their tracks closed to protect the Kauri trees, my waterfall photography has taken a dive. The forests were filled with streams and waterfalls, big and small. Auckland however is almost surrounded by the sea. It seems a good subject to specialise in, especially as I've been taking seascape photos for many years anyway.

So that's pretty much it for 2023. It hasn't been my favourite year and I'm hoping 2024 will be the year things improve.

Noho ora mai my friends.
